Judge blocks Trump triumphal arch construction as veterans question its location: news wrap

Arch project faces a pause

A judge’s ruling put President Trump’s plan for a large triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery on hold. It came hours after a federal panel, which included several Trump appointees, approved the project.

The administration launched a website promoting the proposed monument despite the setback. Some veterans have objected to the site, saying the arch would detract from the solemnity of the cemetery.

Justice Department departures

Two more senior Justice Department officials resigned. Jason Reding Quinones helped lead an investigation described as a grand conspiracy probe into President Trump’s political opponents. Attorney General Todd Blanche thanked the two men for their service but gave no further details about their departures. Harmeet Dhillon had left her role as head of the department’s Civil Rights Division a day earlier.

Floodwaters recede in Georgia, Tennessee

Residents along the Georgia-Tennessee border began returning home after record floodwaters receded. First responders used helicopters, drones and swift water boats to carry out dozens of rescues. In McCaysville, Georgia, mud and debris swamped businesses. One owner estimated losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars in inventory, while saying others had suffered more. McCaysville and neighboring Copperhill, Tennessee, had recently completed cleanup after another flood in August.

Other news from the wrap

Pope Leo arrived in Uruguay to begin a 12-day tour of three Latin American countries. The 71-year-old pontiff was welcomed by the country’s president in Montevideo; the trip had been uncertain after he underwent lung cancer surgery three weeks earlier.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 240 points. The Nasdaq gained more than 1 percent, and the S&P 500 also finished higher.
