Late First-Half Swing Sends Southern Miss Reeling in 54-23 Loss to JMU After It Spiraled

A narrow game turns sharply
Southern Miss and James Madison traded momentum early at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles cut an early 10-0 deficit to 10-7 when John White scored on a three-yard run.
The decisive shift came in the final 29 seconds before halftime. James Madison seized the momentum and went on to win 54-23, improving to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in Sun Belt play.
The loss snapped Southern Miss’ two-game winning streak, built with victories over Louisiana and at UL Monroe. The Golden Eagles fell to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play. With three games left, they need three wins to reach bowl eligibility.
White provides an offensive spark
White, a redshirt sophomore making his first start of the season, led an 11-play, 53-yard drive spanning the first and second quarters. He completed 22 of 35 passes for 266 yards, threw one touchdown pass and added a rushing score without an interception.
His rushing production was limited by multiple sacks: he finished with minus-19 yards on nine carries. Kaden Saunders led Southern Miss with 122 receiving yards, while Mario Sanders had 98 yards and a touchdown.
Head coach Anderson confirmed after the game that White would remain the starter. Anderson said White’s running ability and leadership helped provide a spark when the offense stalled.
First-drive struggles persist
Southern Miss again failed to score on its opening possession, going three plays for five yards before punting. The offense has not scored on its first drive this season.
White said the offense needs to earn an early first down to help sustain drives. He explained that doing so can help Southern Miss move across midfield and reach scoring range.
Problems beyond the scoreboard
The Golden Eagles’ difficulties included penalties, coverage breakdowns in the secondary and weak special-teams play on punts and kickoffs. White was one of the few bright spots in a night that otherwise went poorly for Southern Miss.
White said he had been preparing for a chance to start and was pleased to take the field as Southern Miss’ quarterback. He described the opportunity as the result of staying ready and continuing to work.
