WhatsApp AI-Powered Photo Expansion Tool Starts Rolling Out to More iOS Users, 9to5Mac Reports

Photo expansion enters WhatsApp

The feature resembles Apple Intelligence’s Extend tool, which lets iPhone users expand an image beyond its original edges. Similar options are also found in ChatGPT and Photoshop.

How the editor works

When a user selects a photo in a chat, WhatsApp opens its drawing editor, where AI effects can be applied. Selecting the expansion option prompts Meta AI to analyze the image and produce an expanded version, a process that takes a few seconds.

Users can view the result in the editor and choose whether to send it. The tool also works with status updates. If users dislike the generated image, they can undo the change and try again for a different result.

Wider release remains uncertain

WhatsApp has not indicated when the feature will become broadly available. The report says it has also reached users in the Android beta and some people using the public iOS app. That spread may mean a wider rollout is approaching, but no timeline has been provided.

Key points

  • WhatsApp is testing a Meta AI tool that expands photos beyond their original borders.
  • The feature is available to select users, including some on iOS and Android beta versions.
  • Users can undo an expansion and generate another result if they are unhappy with it.
  • WhatsApp has not announced when the tool will reach more users.
