Yellowstone Killed One of Its Best Characters Early—and Left His Story Behind

A Dutton With Little Screen Time
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone helped establish a broader television world that includes Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness and Tulsa King. Though the main series ended with Season 5, the Dutton family continues to appear in Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
Lee, played by Dave Annable, was John Dutton’s firstborn and heir to the family ranch. He cared about the land and cattle, but appeared in just three episodes, while his siblings Kayce, Beth and Jamie drew more attention.
Lee’s Death Set Events Moving
Kayce kills Robert in self-defense; Robert is Monica Dutton’s brother. That act creates further trouble, while Lee’s death helps trigger the wider conflict over the Duttons’ ancestral land.
Flashbacks Kept Him Present
After Lee’s death, Annable left the series. For years, Lee’s only return was a photograph in the Season 2 episode “Resurrection Day,” before flashbacks showed him as a child in the 1990s. Kip Denton played young Lee in those scenes, though he often went uncredited outside the episode “Blood the Boy.” One flashback, set at the Dutton family Christmas in 1996, showed a warm moment between Lee and a young Kayce.
The Story Rarely Looks Back
The flashbacks are scarce and do little to center Lee himself. By the end of Season 1, the present-day story had largely moved past his death. John’s fight for the ranch is later tied to a promise to his father, rather than being framed as a way to honor Lee. The article also notes that Lee is the only Dutton child to have been killed, despite earlier attempts on other family members’ lives.
