Tech could get hammered in Congress as Democrats prepare hearings and investigations

Democrats promise tougher oversight

Democrats say they intend to use committee control to investigate corporate influence and question technology executives under oath. Their plans follow what the story describes as a historic election win that gave the party majorities in both chambers.

Sen. Ed Markey said Democrats would need many subpoenas, while Sen. Ron Wyden posted a one-word call for them. House Oversight Committee Democrats also signaled plans to examine the Trump administration and corporate conduct.

AI and data centers in focus

Rep. Greg Casar said AI company CEOs should testify under oath. He linked public resistance to data centers with the 2026 election and warned that AI could become a larger force in American politics.

Rep. Frank Pallone said he would pursue policies addressing consumer and environmental protections, clean energy and Big Tech. Sen. Bernie Sanders has called for a pause on AI, while Rep. Ro Khanna has identified billionaire taxation as a priority.

Musk and corporate influence

Democrats are also considering inquiries into Elon Musk, who led the Department of Government Efficiency during the second Trump administration. Lawmakers have raised questions about his role in DOGE, possible conflicts of interest and reports of Starlink service disruptions in Ukraine.

Jamie Raskin has already held a shadow hearing on the Justice Department’s settlement of the Live Nation-Ticketmaster antitrust case and sought information from Amazon, Google, Meta and Oracle about data center proposal agreements. Rep. Sam Liccardo supports scrutiny of DOGE but cautioned against hearings without substantial legislation.
