Four Southeast Asian markets get a dedicated destination as TikTok quietly launches its stand alone Shop app, TechCrunch

App reaches four markets

The stand-alone app is available on iOS and Android in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Social media consultant Matt Navarra first spotted it. TikTok Shop offers personalized recommendations and shopping through livestreams and short-form videos. The app also includes checkout, order tracking and customer support.

Its description lists free shipping offers, first-order benefits and secure payments. TikTok is also using app-exclusive deals to encourage users to shop in the separate app rather than the main TikTok platform.

A direct e-commerce push

Giving TikTok Shop its own app could help the service reach shoppers who do not use the main TikTok platform. It also positions the company more directly against established e-commerce apps such as Amazon and Temu.

The move echoes Amazon’s earlier effort to draw users with Inspire, a short-form video feed designed to attract consumer attention and drive sales on Amazon. TikTok is now seeking to bring shoppers from other platforms into its own commerce ecosystem.

TikTok did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment about the rollout. It has not said whether the app will expand more widely or reach the United States.

Expansion beyond social media

A U.S. launch would put TikTok Shop in competition with Amazon and Temu, as well as retailers including Walmart and Target. Customers of those stores have grown accustomed to ordering through their apps.

The stand-alone Shop app is part of TikTok’s broader expansion beyond social networking and entertainment. The company has also added games, restaurant guides, sports hubs, hotel booking and microdramas, and is exploring payments.
