Sony profits surge 44% as PlayStation performance and Spider-Man success lift quarterly earnings

Sony profits climb sharply
Net profits reached 449.60 billion yen, approximately $2.84 billion, in the three months ended September. That was a 44 percent rise from 311.4 billion yen, or $1.96 billion, in the same period last year.
Sony attributed the increase largely to its PlayStation business and the performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film’s reported box-office success also contributed to results at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Spider-Man boosts film earnings
Released in July, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, making it the third-highest-grossing movie in history, according to the report. Sony Pictures Entertainment posted earnings of $581 million for the three months ended September. That was a 527 percent increase from $93 million in the same period in 2025.
PlayStation sales show mixed results
PlayStation 5 console sales fell to 2.6 million units in the second quarter, compared with 4 million in Q2 2025. The report also said PlayStation game sales rose across both digital downloads and physical discs.
Sony-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million. The increase in game sales came despite a week-long player blackout in August protesting Sony’s plan to discontinue discs.
