Marvel VisionQuest Finally Pays Off a 15-Year MCU Easter Egg About J.I.M.

A forgotten exhibit returns

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes visit the 1943 World Exposition of Tomorrow, where an exhibit features an android called the Synthetic Man. The reference pointed to Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, who first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939.

In the comics, Hammond was created by Phineas Horton and could control fire. He later fought Nazis in World War II as a member of the Invaders, alongside heroes including Captain America, Bucky and Namor.

VisionQuest reveals J.I.M.

VisionQuest begins developing the connection in its second episode, “Theseus.” A painting inside Vision’s digital world depicts Horton’s Synthetic Man engulfed in flames. In episode four, “Malware,” Vision and Tommy Shepherd hear Katerina Wells discuss the Synthetic Man’s formal name: J.I.M., short for Joule Individual Machine. The name also refers to Jim Hammond, the character’s comic-book identity.

A new place in MCU history

The series recasts Hammond’s role in the MCU, presenting J.I.M. as a predecessor to sentient artificial intelligence and automatons such as Vision and Ultron. Rather than controlling fire, J.I.M. becomes unstable because he cannot process complex emotions.

Vision tells Tommy that J.I.M.’s feelings caused him to overheat until his entire being was consumed by fire. The explanation connects the old film reference to the MCU’s later synthetic beings and gives the mythology a new link to its past.
