How I Traded Apartments With a Stranger for 2 Weeks and Made a Bucket-List Trip Possible

A swap takes shape

Last November, newly out of a relationship, the narrator began looking for a warm New Year’s getaway from New York City. After searching for lower-cost options, she considered exchanging homes rather than paying for a hotel.

She posted a video offering her Brooklyn studio, which has views of the Manhattan skyline. It quickly spread on TikTok, and she and Thiala video-called, showed each other their homes, and booked flights within 48 hours.

Preparing each other’s homes

The two spoke daily before the trip, sharing packing lists and ideas for what to do in each city. They bought Christmas decorations for each other and exchanged building instructions, WiFi passwords, and guidance about feeding the narrator’s picky cat.

The narrator said she did not hesitate to trust Thiala with her home and cat. Their conversations made the arrangement feel less like handing a stranger the keys and more like welcoming a new friend.

Cape Town through local eyes

On arrival at Thiala’s one-bedroom apartment in Cape Town, the narrator found a welcome basket of South African snacks and watched a sunset from the living room. She briefly wondered whether the exchange was fair because her studio was small and Thiala was leaving Cape Town’s summer for a freezing New York winter.

She recalled that Thiala wanted the exchange, and said the point was making memories rather than comparing apartment sizes. During her stay, she went to the beach, saw penguins, visited Thiala’s favorite Pilates studio, and explored Chapman's Peak.

Meeting after 15 days

The pair documented the trip as it happened, but they had not met face-to-face until their 15 days in each other’s homes were over. When they finally met, Thiala had one last Chick-fil-A DoorDash, and the narrator was reunited with her cat.

They talked through their experiences in person, and the narrator helped Thiala fit her large fur coat into a suitcase. They then left to return to their routines. The narrator said the exchange brought an affordable bucket-list trip, a new friendship, and a chance to experience each city through a resident’s recommendations.
