BBC’s 7-Episode Fantasy Miniseries Recommended by George R.R. Martin: A Historical Storytelling Masterclass

Two Magicians, One Rivalry

Based on Susanna Clarke’s debut novel, the series centers on Mr Norrell, played by Eddie Marsan, and Jonathan Strange, played by Bertie Carvel. Norrell is reserved and analytical; Strange is younger, outgoing and naturally gifted.

The story begins in the early 19th century, when practical magic has nearly disappeared. As the two men pursue their abilities, their relationship grows increasingly hostile, shaped by ambition, fear and jealousy.

History Meets the Supernatural

The series combines period drama with wartime action and fantasy. Norrell seeks political influence and upholds ideas of respectability, while his dealings with fairies bring dangerous consequences. Strange travels across Europe during the war, where he reanimates dead soldiers and conjures enormous horses from sand. The show also ventures into an eerie otherworldly ballroom and an extradimensional realm.

A Story Given Room

The adaptation brings together social customs, Regency politics and British military history with magic. Its blend of influences includes Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe and fantasy writers, without losing focus on the central rivalry.

Before the BBC made the story as a miniseries, New Line Cinema pursued a film adaptation. Screenwriters Christopher Hampton and Julian Fellowes were involved, but the project did not move forward as a shorter film; the BBC version was led by writer Peter Harness and director Toby Haynes.
