Watch midterm results: Trump’s Republican Party loses control of US Congress
Democrats take both chambers
With most preliminary results declared, Democrats won the Senate after victories in former Republican strongholds including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and Iowa. The party’s run of major wins was dubbed a “Blue Tsunami.” Democrats also regained the House of Representatives, flipping seats in Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana and North Carolina. The party last held the chamber in 2023. All 435 House seats were up for election, along with 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.
Trump blames Republican candidates
Trump initially blamed Republican candidates for the party’s losses, which the report described as a disastrous night for Republicans. He later posted a picture of a MAGA-style red hat bearing the word “VETO.” In a phone interview with Fox News, the president again faulted lackluster Republican candidates. Some had lost in traditionally Republican states, including Texas and South Carolina.
Notable Senate victories
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Trump-backed Attorney General Ken Paxton in a significant upset. The win ended the party’s 38-year losing streak in the state. In Michigan’s open Senate race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won and criticized Trump and JD Vance. He became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
