Game of Thrones Franchise Is Officially Replacing Jon Snow’s Lead Role in 2027

A New Lead for Westeros
Jon Snow was a central figure in HBO’s Game of Thrones, with a story that ended in exile beyond the Wall. Many viewers found that conclusion unsatisfying, while the next books by George R.R. Martin have no definitive release window.
The franchise’s next major release shifts the focus to players. Developed by PlaySide Studios, War for Westeros lets them influence the fate of the Seven Kingdoms rather than follow Jon as the main driving force.
Choose a Faction
Players can command House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen or the White Walkers. The game’s sandbox-style single-player campaign includes conquering territory and leading armies. Players will decide which faction wins the war and which hero takes the Iron Throne. They can pursue outcomes such as a Stark victory, a Lannister triumph, Daenerys conquering Westeros or the White Walkers prevailing.
Jon Remains Playable
Jon is among the game’s playable heroes, alongside Robb Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark and the Night King. His battlefield abilities include rallying nearby troops. Game director Ryan McMahon said the campaign is not limited to one season or point in the timeline. It brings characters and factions from across the series together, with players choosing alliances and determining who survives.
Release and Alternate Endings
Originally expected in 2026, War for Westeros is now set for early 2027 on PC through Steam. The game can offer a different conclusion with each playthrough. Its alternate scenarios will not alter the show’s canon. Instead, players can explore outcomes for the War of the Five Kings and the wider contest for the Iron Throne that differ from the televised story.
