Packers Safety John Saunders Learns Practice Habits With NFL Cousin’s Advice

A new stop in Green Bay

The Packers added Saunders during a series of practice-squad moves. To make room, they released safety Kahlef Hailassie. Green Bay is Saunders’ fourth team this year. He previously spent time with the Patriots, Jets and Browns after beginning the season with New England following his release from Miami.

From overdoing it to balance

Saunders signed with Miami after the draft but did not make its roster during training camp. He spent two months on the Dolphins’ practice squad before the Patriots claimed him. He appeared on New England’s roster for three games without playing, then returned to its practice squad.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said the team asked Saunders to improve his practice habits and use practice reps effectively. Saunders said he began working too hard and had to ease back, explaining, “I really had to learn, like practicing like a pro.” During the next Patriots training camp, Saunders recorded 13 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and two passes defensed in the preseason, but did not earn a roster place. Safety Kevin Byard called him “a ballhawk.”

Advice from his cousin

Saunders is related to Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker, who started his first four NFL seasons with the Bears before joining Pittsburgh in free agency. Brisker has started all eight games this season.

Saunders said Brisker encouraged him to stay focused and listen to coaches. He told On3’s Andy Staples in 2023 that the advice had stayed with him as he moved through college and his football career.
