NCIS Season 25 Officially Confirms Michael Weatherly’s Role Status Remains Unsettled

DiNozzo’s return and new role
After spending years away from the flagship NCIS series, Michael Weatherly has returned as Tony DiNozzo. The character is now leading the agency as its director, a position that marks a significant change from his earlier time with NCIS.
Binder weighs the future
Speaking with TV Insider, showrunner Steven D. Binder said the production is handling Weatherly’s return one season at a time. He also noted that television production involves tight script schedules, with NCIS making 20 episodes in a season.
Binder said he is enjoying having DiNozzo in the director’s chair and sees no reason for that to slow. Still, he said the team has not yet looked far enough ahead to determine whether Weatherly will remain for Season 25.
The series and wider franchise
NCIS Season 24 airs Tuesdays on CBS, and episodes are available on Paramount+. The current cast includes Sean Murray as Timothy McGee, Wilmer Valderrama as Nick Torres, Katrina Law as Jessica Knight, Brian Dietzen as Jimmy Palmer, Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines and Cole as Alden Parker.
The franchise is also expanding through NCIS: Origins. Austin Stowell plays a younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while Mark Harmon appears in the present-day storyline.
