David Valadao, House Republican who voted to impeach Trump, loses reelection bid in California

Valadao loses California seat

CBS News projected that Valadao lost his bid for another term representing California’s 22nd District. He first won election to the House in 2012. Democrats took the seat in 2018, during a year when they flipped more than 40 seats and regained control of the House. Valadao won it back in 2020.

Impeachment vote set him apart

Valadao was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump. Of that group, only Valadao and Rep. Dan Newhouse remain in Congress; Newhouse is retiring.

Race drew national attention

The intraparty primary feud unfolded in a district with a heavily Hispanic population. The constituency had shifted away from Democrats in 2024, while polls before the midterms showed Mr. Trump’s approval ratings among Latino voters falling sharply.

The contest also came as Democrats debated whether progressives could perform well in competitive races. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who represents Louisiana, campaigned with Valadao in September and described the race as among the three or four most important for Republicans seeking to retain the House majority.
