Maya Hawke Set to Star in Magic: The Gathering Movie as Development Advances

Hawke Joins the Cast
Maya Hawke is the first actor reported to join the Magic: The Gathering movie. Sources say she will take a key part in a film expected to have an ensemble cast, and that she was prioritized for the role without an audition.
Hawke became widely known as Robin in Netflix’s Stranger Things. She has also appeared in Inside Out 2 and is set to appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as Wiress, a District 3 tribute.
A Long Development Path
Work on a Magic: The Gathering movie began at 20th Century Fox in the mid-2010s, but the project was shelved after Disney acquired the studio. Hasbro later partnered with Legendary Entertainment, known for Dune, to develop a cinematic universe.
The movie and a television show were announced in February 2025. In June that year, Calls writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald were brought on to write the script. Eight months later, Matt Johnson joined as director and is reportedly revising the screenplay.
Story And Release Questions
The film’s plot and central characters remain unknown. The franchise has more than 30 years of multiverse lore and story expansions, giving filmmakers the option to create new magic users or adapt established characters and storylines.
Legendary and Hasbro have not identified a release partner. Hasbro previously worked with Netflix on an animated adaptation, previewed in part at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Netflix is also developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series with Hasbro, though no Magic movie partnership has been announced.
The Game Behind The Film
Magic: The Gathering is a strategic collectible card game published by Wizards of the Coast. Players build customized decks of creatures, spells and abilities, then try to reduce an opponent’s life total to zero.
The game blends fantasy themes with tactical play, resource management and deck-building. It debuted in 1993 and remains an influential trading card game more than three decades later.
