A turn to heroism can matter: Magneto, Juggernaut and 6 comic book villains who actually made great heroes

Magneto Finds His Way Back

Magneto spent years fighting humanity and clashing with the X-Men. Despite the conflict, Erik Lehnsherr—now using the name Max—showed honor and developed respect for the team. He eventually joined the X-Men, though he sometimes left to follow his own path. Even so, he repeatedly returned to what the story describes as home with the team.

Juggernaut Chooses A Different Path

Cain Marko began as an enemy of the X-Men, driven by his resentment toward his stepbrother, Charles Xavier. During Chuck Austen’s X-Men and Uncanny X-Men run, Cain said part of that anger came from Charles not protecting them from their abusive father.

A later bond with young mutant Samuel Paré became a turning point. Both had experienced abusive fathers; Samuel grew more confident, while Cain learned to be emotionally open.

Juggernaut sometimes returned to villainy, but his heroism continued to develop, including in Jed MacKay’s X-Men run. His efforts to improve made him more than the brute he had once been.

Norman Osborn Learns From Mistakes

Norman Osborn has led a company, the Thunderbolts and the (Dark) Avengers. He could manage dangerous groups even while struggling with his own stability. His progress has been imperfect. While taking over for Spider-Man, he sent villains to the hospital, and in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity, he lied to Jessica Drew while training young Spider-People. Still, Osborn continues to learn from his mistakes and try to do better, even as he has a long way to go.

Basil Karlo Fights His Urges

Among the many Clayfaces, Basil Karlo is presented as someone trying to resist his darker impulses. Batman gave him a chance to change rather than let an accident define him.

Karlo joined Batwoman’s team in James Tynion IV’s Detective Comics run and became an important member. One notable achievement was helping Cassandra Cain find her voice. In Clayface: Celebrity Dirt, Karlo works to stop one of the Clayface castoffs from killing people. His motive began selfishly, but the story shows him as a hero at heart.

Emma Frost’s Changing Role

Emma Frost’s time as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club was brief compared with her later role as a protagonist. As an enemy, however, she was among the X-Men’s worst foes.

In Astonishing X-Men, Kitty Pryde said meeting Emma taught her more about good and evil than anything before or since. The passage ends while describing Emma’s history, so it provides no further details about her change.
