Maximum X-Men Officially Introduces Classic Hero Colossus in a Bold New Costume

A new look for Colossus

A preview of Maximum X-Men #1 shows Colossus fighting Annihilus’ bug soldiers in a new outfit. It consists of red bracers, trunks and boots, plus a belt bearing the X-Men logo.

The look leaves much of Colossus’ steel form exposed. Cover art by Tony S. Daniel and Jay David Ramos for the first two issues indicates the design is his continuing costume, rather than damage from the fight.

A change from Tank armor

Colossus’ previous identity as Tank began in 2024’s X-Force, by Geoffrey Thorne and Marcus To. He wore red armor and used hard-light weapons. In 2025’s X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1, Colossus told his sister Magik he intended to keep the armor. He cited its weapon-generating gloves and a helmet that blocks telepathy, saying, “being constantly mind-controlled was a problem.” The article does not say why he has now abandoned it.

Storm leads a replacement team

Maximum X-Men launches this week with Storm leading a mutant team that stands in for the Avengers after their dissolution in the recent Avengers Armageddon event. The group is set to serve as Earth’s main superhuman defenders.

Its first adventure pits the team against an invasion from the Negative Zone led by Annihilus. Justice, Firestar and Betsy Braddock are among the teammates wearing new, matching outfits.

Betsy takes a new codename

Betsy Braddock will use the codename Butterfly, alongside her new costume. The name refers to the psionic signature around her face when she uses telepathy. Betsy lost the Psylocke name in 2019. The codename became associated with Kwannon, whose body Betsy had possessed for much of her X-Men history; after reclaiming her body, Kwannon kept it. Betsy later served as Captain Britain.
