After Overnight Suspicious Movements, Poland Beefs Up Security Along Russia Border

Security operation launched

Poland began a large-scale security operation this week along its border with Kaliningrad, the country’s national police chief said. A special command center at national police headquarters was established to coordinate the response.

Suspicious movements reported

Tusk said suspicious activity was observed overnight near Kaliningrad, including people carrying flashlights close to the border. He said security forces and resources were quickly mobilized. The prime minister said the response prevented possible acts of provocation, while acknowledging officials could not establish whether that had been the individuals’ intention. He added that intelligence had pointed for weeks to potential acts of sabotage or more serious provocation against the European Union.

Strategic border setting

Kaliningrad is bordered by Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic Sea, and has significant military and strategic importance. Russian security agencies, including the FSB and GRU, are widely believed to have a presence there.

East of the exclave lies the Suwałki Corridor, the only land connection between the Baltic NATO states and the rest of the alliance. Poland and Lithuania share a short border there, between Russian and Belarusian territory.

Wider European security concerns

By Tuesday afternoon, Polish authorities had not published evidence of specific plans for sabotage or an attack originating in Kaliningrad. The alert followed months of sabotage, air incursions and other low-level incidents across Europe that have largely been blamed on Russia.

MI5 chief Ken McCallum described serious security threats facing Britain and Europe, calling Russia the leading state threat. He said Russia had so far used tactics that stopped short of conventional conflict, while Russian drones have repeatedly entered NATO airspace in Eastern Europe during the war in Ukraine.
