Lions Can Become Serious Contenders If They Make Defensive Additions Soon

A second-half ground-game turnaround
Detroit’s offense struggled early against Minnesota’s top-ranked defense. The line gave up four sacks, Jared Goff threw his first interception of the season and finished with a season-low 176 passing yards. The Lions had six points at halftime.
Detroit shifted toward the run after the break. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 116 yards in the second half, including a 30-yard touchdown, while Sione Vaki added 65 yards on 11 carries.
Their work helped put Detroit in position for its winning score: Goff’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. Coach Dan Campbell said Vaki had taken a big step and gained the team’s trust.
Defensive injuries raise urgency
The win came as Detroit lost five defensive players, as well as center Cade Mays and running back and kick returner Jacob Saylors. The injured defenders were rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder, edge rusher DJ Wonnum, safety Brian Branch, cornerback D.J. Reed and linebacker Jack Campbell.
Jack Campbell was hurt on the opening play of the fourth quarter while attempting a tackle on Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson. He was taken from the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation of a neck injury.
Trade deadline needs come into focus
The injuries have sharpened the case for general manager Brad Holmes to add defensive help before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Detroit needs a cornerback to complement Reed, who has played better in recent weeks, and could also benefit from adding a safety.
The safety need reflects uncertainty about Branch’s health and Kerby Joseph’s ability when he returns. Campbell’s injury also leaves the Lions with a significant gap at linebacker.
