Florida Gators’ Reopened Quarterback Battle Raises Questions Before Oklahoma

No starter named yet

Florida’s depth chart lists Philo “OR” Jones Jr. at quarterback, the first time this season the Gators have used that designation for the position. Sumrall said Monday he would not announce a clear No. 1, and said both quarterbacks need to be prepared to play.

The competition has sharpened in recent weeks. Philo has lost his last three starts, while Jones Jr. won his first start against Texas and replaced Philo during Saturday’s loss to Georgia.

Injuries and costly plays

Both quarterbacks have dealt with injuries. Philo recently returned from a shoulder injury, while Jones Jr. has an undisclosed issue that could require offseason surgery. Against Georgia, Jones Jr. threw for 172 yards and ran for a touchdown.

Sumrall said both quarterbacks had plays that put the ball at risk. Philo threw an interception while falling, and a Jones Jr. interception was erased by a roughing-the-passer penalty. Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner said the team needs to avoid damaging plays that disrupt drives.

Pressure across the offense

Florida’s offensive line struggled against Georgia’s pass rush, and dropped passes also halted momentum. The Bulldogs made 11 tackles for loss and recorded four sacks; both quarterbacks had to scramble repeatedly. A missed block by running back Evan Pryor preceded a strip-sack of Jones Jr. that was returned for a touchdown.

Sumrall argued that pressure on the quarterbacks was part of a broader offensive problem, saying even Tom Brady would have faced too much duress. Florida has three losses in its last four games, but its remaining schedule includes Oklahoma, Vanderbilt and Florida State, along with a road game at Kentucky.
