Election Day arrives: polls open as Americans cast ballots in pivotal midterms
Control of Congress at stake
The midterm elections will decide which party controls Congress for the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. Trump said Tuesday that results would be “better than you think” for Republicans.
Democrats have focused on Trump’s approval rating, the high cost of living and the war in Iran. Senate races are close in Alaska, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina, Texas, Kansas and Iowa, while Republicans are trying to hold House districts Trump won in 2024.
Candidates and leaders vote
After voting in Brooklyn, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he expected Democrats to win control of the Senate. He described his mood as “nauseously optimistic” and said whether Trump would work with Democrats would be up to the president.
Florida voting disruptions
Scott said the malfunction incorrectly told some voters they had the wrong ballot. “None of the counts were impacted,” he said, adding that nobody voted on the wrong ballot. Severe flooding also forced some polling locations to move.
