Harry Potter Faces Criticism as Magic: The Gathering and Fourth Wing Lead 7 Upcoming Fantasy Shows Ranked by Hype

Harry Potter Faces Skepticism

The ensemble includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Early reports estimate that production could span a decade, and HBO has renewed the series for a second season.

The project has faced a generally poor reception among core fans. Comparisons with the film series, negative public opinion of J. K. Rowling and concerns that the project is a cash grab have contributed to the backlash.

Magic Reaches the Screen

Magic: The Gathering is a trading card franchise built around multiple realities and Planeswalkers, wizards able to travel between worlds. Though the property has appeared in comics and novels, it has not previously received a movie or television adaptation. Fans are looking forward to the series and a forthcoming movie adaptation directed by Matt Johnson.

Fourth Wing Brings Dragons

Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, the first book in the Empyrean series, is being adapted for Prime Video. Yarros is an executive producer alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan, Liz Pelletier and Athena Wickham; Meredith Averill is showrunner.

The story follows Violet Sorrengail at Basgiath War College as she trains to become a dragon rider. Esther McGregor will play Violet, and Emilio Sakraya will play Xaden Riorson, her rival and love interest. The story features dangerous quests, fierce competition and romance.

The book’s success on BookTok has helped build excitement for the adaptation. Its action, romance and dragons could help it become a major fantasy series, though whether it reaches that level remains uncertain.
