Mighty Ducks Star Shaun Weiss Details 7-Year Sobriety Journey After Addiction Battle and Homelessness

Seven years in recovery

Weiss told E! News he has been clean for seven years. He said he spent three years in sober living and completed a year of inpatient treatment. The former child actor described the road to recovery as difficult. “I really suffered,” Weiss said.

Building support for others

Weiss is working to launch charities in Los Angeles and Atlanta for people experiencing addiction and homelessness. He wants the organizations to provide a safe, healthy setting for people to get clean.

He said access to high-level treatment played a key role in his recovery. After seeing hundreds of young people with addiction come and go, Weiss said helping others has become a source of purpose.

Reflecting on personal struggles

Weiss said he had not been happy and had looked outside himself for fulfillment. He said yoga and related practices helped him become more self-contained and take greater control of his happiness.

He also linked depression to the problems that led to drug use. Weiss reflected that being a child actor could make discipline difficult for his parents, especially when he was helping pay for the car.

Looking ahead without regrets

Weiss, 48, returned to acting last year, playing Freddy in Deformelody: An American Nightmare. Despite the difficult periods in his life, he said he has no regrets and is happy with the person he is today. Asked what he would tell his younger self, Weiss said, “Hang in there. Everything will be alright.”
