Here’s Why the Original Tesla Roadster Still Commands High Prices

A performance EV pioneer

Unveiled in 2006 and released in 2008, the Lotus Elise-based Roadster was the first production electric vehicle to offer a usable driving range, reaching up to 244 miles. Its electric torque also helped it accelerate to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

Tesla sold 2,450 Roadsters during the model’s lifetime. The car attracted buyers while challenging the idea that electric vehicles were slow and impractical. Its original price was $98,000, equivalent to about $153,000 in 2026.

Prices vary by condition

Hagerty places concours-condition Roadsters between $85,633 and $97,767. Cars in excellent condition are valued from just over $66,000 to $79,567, while good examples range from $45,567 to $58,967.

Fair-condition cars are valued between $27,167 and $39,433. The estimates show that condition makes a substantial difference, although even lower-priced examples remain costly compared with many used cars.

Rarity supports resale values

The Roadster’s role in Tesla’s history, its reputation for helping bring electric vehicles into the mainstream and its limited production all contribute to its value. Tesla made 2,450 cars across the 2008 to 2012 model years, making used examples difficult to find.

A CarGurus listing showed one 19,000-mile Roadster priced at $81,600. Another recently sold for $77,000 on Bring a Trailer, figures that the account describes as representative of current prices.

Some cars sell for more

Most Roadsters sell for less than their original 2008 price, but limited-edition Signature One Hundred models have become exceptionally valuable. One Roadster with fewer than 1,000 miles sold for $250,000, and other examples have brought more than $100,000.

Hagerty’s figures put the market’s high point in 2023. At that time, concours cars were valued around $164,000, excellent examples around $131,000, good-condition cars at $95,300 and fair-condition models at $61,300.
