Deadspin Field Level Media Ranks UConn No. 5 Among Top 25 for 2026-27

A contender with new pieces

UConn has become a regular national championship contender under coach Dan Hurley. The team is bringing back important talent while adding players who could strengthen its title hopes. The Huskies fell six points short of a third national championship of the Hurley era last season.

Guards lead the outlook

Preseason Big East Player of the Year Silas Demary Jr. returns to direct the offense. He will play alongside Braylon Mullins, who made the game-winning 3-pointer against Duke in the Elite Eight. At center, Hurley added Na’Jai Hines, described as a “Baby Shaq.” Hurley had faced Hines twice when he was a breakout player at Seton Hall.

A demanding nonconference slate

UConn’s record could suffer because of a difficult nonconference schedule. The Huskies have a title-game rematch against Michigan, followed by a road game at Arizona. Other scheduled opponents include Duke, Illinois, Kansas and Virginia.

Freshman draws attention

Five-star freshman wing Colben Landrew is the team’s top newcomer. Reports from Storrs say he is already showing potential to follow Stephon Castle, Liam McNeeley and Mullins.
