After $6 billion heist, Binance resumes withdrawals for major cryptocurrencies in phases

Withdrawals Return in Phases
Binance said it had reopened withdrawals for some major cryptocurrencies on Sunday, following the theft of more than $6 billion in assets. The exchange had suspended user withdrawals after the attack and said it would restore them in stages.
By 5 a.m. Eastern Time, withdrawals were available for Bitcoin, Ethereal, BNB, XRP, Base, Doge and Optimism. Binance said it would bring back other assets and networks as security checks were completed. The exchange announced that the first withdrawal batch was open in a post on X.
Company Pledges Loss Coverage
Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by daily trading volumes, said it would cover 90% of the losses. It plans to use company funds to buy tokens and replenish a large portion of what was stolen. News of the attack, thought to be the biggest-ever crypto heist, sent most major cryptocurrency prices sharply lower on Friday.
FBI Points To North Korea
The FBI said on Saturday that North Korea was responsible for the theft, confirming earlier suspicions from private investigators and analysts. The agency identified the group known as TraderTraitor, which is affiliated with Pyongyang.
The FBI said the theft involved more than $6 billion in virtual assets and took place on or about October 29, 2026. TraderTraitor was also blamed for stealing $1.5 billion from the Bybit platform in February last year.
Stolen Funds May Be Laundered
The FBI said it had observed TraderTraitor actors converting stolen assets into Ethereum. It expected further laundering through decentralized finance and instant swap services. The agency urged private-sector entities to block transactions involving, or derived from, addresses the group is using to launder the stolen assets.
