Safe’s Missing-Daughter Mystery Still Delivers: 8 Years Later, Harlan Coben’s First Netflix Miniseries Is Best

A disappearance unsettles the neighborhood

Safe centers on Tom Delaney, a widowed surgeon trying to raise his two daughters after his wife’s death. When his eldest, Lucy, disappears, Tom turns to his new girlfriend, Detective Sergeant Sophie Mason, for help finding her.

The story unfolds inside a secure, gated community. Its residents appear close-knit, but their intertwined lives and hidden secrets make the setting a source of tension as the search grows more urgent.

A carefully shaped production

Coben created the series with British writer Danny Brockelhurst, who won a BAFTA. The show was produced by Red, StudioCanal’s British company, known for work including Queer as Folk and Happy Valley. Red’s Nicola Schindler said both writers were involved throughout production. She told Variety they reviewed auditions, approved department heads, watched daily rushes and attended every edit, describing their participation as “100%.”

Casting grounds the thriller

Michael C. Hall plays Tom, a suburban father who becomes an amateur investigator after Lucy goes missing. His performance presents a man whose unusual choices—including bugging his daughter’s phone and entering burning buildings—come from his determination to save her.

Amanda Abbington plays Sophie, while the supporting cast helps make the community feel lived-in. The contrast between ordinary suburban life and the residents’ tangled stories gives the mystery its grounding.

Twists keep the story moving

The opening episode quickly introduces family conflict, a body in a swimming pool and Tom’s search for Lucy. Later twists and misleading clues build on those early shocks.

The series’ appeal lies in the mix of suspense and recognizable family concerns. Its gated setting, ensemble of connected characters and brisk mystery keep the drama focused on the people as well as the clues.
