Illusions, Shapeshifting and Telepathy: 5 Most Powerful Monsters Geralt Ever Faced in Witcher Books

Vereena’s dangerous attack
In “A Grain of Truth,” from The Last Wish, Geralt visits Nivellen’s secluded manor. The black-haired woman there first appears to be a rusalka, but Geralt realizes she is a bruxa.
Bruxae can take the form of beautiful women or enormous bats, move quickly and produce powerful sonic screams. Vereena’s attack nearly incapacitates Geralt, and his silver sword barely wounds her; her telepathic messages reach him directly. Nivellen helps Geralt survive, allowing the witcher to deliver the finishing blow.
An aguara’s illusions
In Season of Storms, Geralt encounters an aguara, a shapeshifting fox demon also called a vixen. He identifies aguaras as antherions, animals able to assume human form; they cannot reproduce naturally and kidnap young elven girls to transform them.
After a young aguara is captured aboard the Prophet Lebioda, her adoptive mother uses illusions to hide river channels, alter the ship’s compass and conjure phantom snakes. She also bewitches a vodyanoy to attack the vessel. Geralt struggles to tell her illusions from reality.
Villentretenmerth, the golden dragon
Villentretenmerth appears in “The Bounds of Reason,” a story in Sword of Destiny. Geralt describes four usual dragon categories—green, red, black and the exceptionally rare white—while golden dragons are so elusive that he initially considers them mythical.
The account identifies Villentretenmerth as a powerful golden dragon and notes his extraordinary intelligence and telepathic ability. It ends while introducing him, without providing further details of his encounter with Geralt.
Stories beyond the books
Vereena’s story was adapted in the premiere of Netflix’s The Witcher Season 2. Bruxae also appear as a main enemy in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, where their screams, speed and invisibility feature in gameplay.
Aguaras have appeared in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and inspired Dark Horse’s The Witcher: Fox Children comic. Netflix’s animated Nightmare of the Wolf features a similar foxlike shapeshifter, Kitsu, but does not explicitly identify her as an aguara.
