Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid: Defender struggling for minutes, where does his future lie?

Limited chances at Madrid

Alexander-Arnold has appeared in seven of Real Madrid’s 13 matches so far this season, but has started only four. His sole assist came in a 4-0 home victory over Malaga.

The arrival of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan increased competition at right-back. Mourinho has also preferred Fede Valverde, usually a midfielder, in the starting role.

Injuries interrupted progress

Madrid paid 10 million euros (£8.33 million) last summer to secure Alexander-Arnold early, rather than wait for his Liverpool contract to expire. At his first public appearance, he spoke in Spanish and called the move a “dream come true,” according to Alexander-Arnold.

His first campaign included 21 La Liga appearances, with 14 starts, out of a possible 38 in 2025-26. A hamstring problem in September, a thigh injury in December and a pre-season muscle issue disrupted his preparations and time on the pitch.

Future and international prospects

Mourinho has addressed talk of a possible January exit, saying decisions about selection must serve the team. He said Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries accepted his explanation that the choice was about team needs, not directed against either player.

Mourinho has also used Alexander-Arnold in central midfield alongside Valverde when other options were unavailable. The article says he hopes for more playing time across two league matches and one Champions League game before the international break; England manager Thomas Tuchel must decide whether to retain him.
