Mamdani says Trump to grant visa to mother of boy killed in Bronx shooting

Visa agreement announced

Mamdani said he discussed Javits Frimpong’s case with Trump in a Saturday phone call. In a post on X, the mayor said the president had agreed to grant the boy’s mother a visa immediately.

Frimpong’s mother is seeking to travel to New York from Ghana to farewell her son. Trump had not commented publicly at the time of the report.

Teen killed on school route

Frimpong was shot in the abdomen on Thursday morning while heading to school, according to the account of the incident. CCTV footage showed three other teenagers chasing him; he died later that day in hospital.

His father, Thomas Frimpong, said his son had told him he was being bullied at school. Thomas called on police to help find justice for his son.

Investigation and public support

Police say they are investigating the killing, and no arrests have been made. Thousands attended vigils for Frimpong around New York City. The family moved Javits to the United States a year ago in search of a better life for him. Bronx congressman Richie Torres said the borough was mourning a young person whose future had been cut short.

Ghanaian officials assist

Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said Ghanaian officials were coordinating with local authorities and assisting Frimpong’s mother with her visa application. The report notes that visa applications from several African countries have been sharply limited under the Trump administration.
