Two Super Bowl trips later, John Lynch says 10-year partnership with Kyle Shanahan still sounds strong for 49ers

A decade leading San Francisco
Lynch became the 49ers’ general manager and Shanahan their head coach in 2017. Together, they helped make the team a championship contender, reaching two Super Bowls and two NFC Championship Games before last season’s Divisional Round.
The franchise is still pursuing a sixth Lombardi Trophy. Though the title has so far eluded them, Lynch and Shanahan continue to share that aim.
Lynch reflects on partnership
Speaking to NBC Sports Bay Area, Lynch said the decade had passed quickly and that he was grateful for the time together. He described the relationship as one shaped by football’s highs, difficult stretches and shared experiences.
Lynch said sticking together and supporting one another through both good and bad times was central to their partnership. He added that the Super Bowl appearances brought both elation and heartbreak, but that staying aligned had made them stronger. Lynch said he and Shanahan remain focused on the same goals and approach, and that their partnership feels as strong as ever.
Contracts and the next goal
Shanahan recently signed a contract extension at the start of the season, though the deal’s expiration date is not known. He is now the longest-tenured coach in 49ers franchise history.
Lynch’s contract expires after this season, and the report says he may receive a new deal. The team’s immediate aim is a Super Bowl title; San Francisco has started the season 6-1 and could pursue its first championship of this century.
