Before Jumanji, Dwayne Johnson’s Wild Adventure Movie Officially Hits Prime Video for Streaming or Rental

A jungle assignment goes wrong

In The Rundown, Johnson plays Beck, a fixer who is preparing to leave his line of work after one last job. His assignment is to bring Travis Walker back from Brazil, at the request of Travis’s father.

Travis, played by Seann William Scott, is reluctant to go and proves difficult to manage. Beck’s task becomes more complicated when he encounters Mariana, a local who knows the jungle’s mysteries, and Cornelius Hatcher, a gold-mining boss who has built an empire there.

An early leading role

Directed by Peter Berg, the film mixes a treasure-hunting adventure with buddy-comedy elements. Its cast also includes Rosario Dawson as Mariana, Christopher Walken as Hatcher, Ewen Bremner as Declan and Jon Gries as Harvey.

The movie came early in Johnson’s leading-man career, while he was still a major WWE star. It later became known as one of his more enjoyable early action films.

Box office and audience response

The Rundown earned approximately $80.9 million worldwide, against a reported production budget of $85 million. The article characterizes that result as a flop and notes that the budget was large for an action star who was not yet well established in film.

Critics and audiences gave the movie similar scores on Rotten Tomatoes: 69% from critics and 66% from audiences. Praise focused on Johnson’s charisma, his rapport with Scott and the action sequences.
