Deadspin: Andrew Novak Extends Lead by 6 Strokes After 3 Rounds in Mexico

Novak Builds a commanding advantage
Novak followed Friday’s course-record-tying 61 with another low round, finishing Saturday at 9 under. His three-round score is 23-under 190, giving him a six-shot cushion. He again excelled on the back nine, playing it five under for the second straight day. At the par-5 12th, a 333-yard drive and a 277-yard approach set up a 20-foot eagle putt, reversing the bogey he made there Friday.
Novak also leads the field in putting, with 128 feet, 5 inches of putts made through three rounds. He said he kept attacking after his strong performance the day before.
Pavon remains in pursuit
Matthieu Pavon posted a 65 to reach 17 under and take sole possession of second. His round began with a bogey, and he was only one under after seven holes.
At the 287-yard 13th, Pavon drove the green and made a 46-foot putt for eagle. After another bogey, he closed with birdies on the final two holes, saying the finish gave him positive momentum for Sunday.
Ghim and the chasing group
Doug Ghim shot 64 and sits alone in third at 16 under. Pierceson Coody, Max Greyserman and Ben Griffin are tied for fourth, one stroke behind Ghim.
A first individual title at stake
Novak, 31, is seeking his first individual PGA Tour victory. He and Griffin won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last season, but that was a team event.
Novak said an individual win would carry significant implications for 2028 and beyond. He also noted that, even with a substantial lead, he must finish well to earn the title.
