Golf pro kept missing putts, knew something was off, then made a clever switch

Frustration on the greens

The golfer said he had turned several rounds of 66 and 67 into 69 and 70, results he felt were not good enough. He also described repeatedly finishing near the bottom in putting despite being told there was nothing wrong with his technique.

After struggling week after week, he said he became increasingly frustrated. At the Vidanta World Mexico Open, he recalled being the worst putter in the field.

An old putter returns

While sorting through clutter, he found a putter he had used years earlier. It was rusted, and he did not know its lie or loft, but he began using it at the Wyndham Championship in early August.

His results varied afterward. At the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, he tied for 44th and ranked 54th in strokes gained: putting.

A record-setting Friday

At the Vidanta World Mexico Open, the golfer shot a 10-under 61 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead after the second round. The score tied his personal best and the course record at Vidante Villarte.

He also ranked first in the field in strokes gained: putting that day. He acknowledged that the putter was not the only factor, saying he may have been overthinking and had returned to simply hitting putts.

Third round broadcast details

The tournament’s third round was scheduled for Saturday. Golf Channel was set to broadcast it from 4 to 7 p.m. ET.
