Tennessee blocked Giants’ push for Jeffery Simmons; NFL trade rumors include Jets, Garrett Wilson statement

Giants tried to land Simmons

New York sought Jeffery Simmons after losing Dexter Lawrence II in the offseason. General manager Joe Schoen contacted Tennessee counterpart Mike Borgonzi, who said the All-Pro defensive tackle was not available.

John Harbaugh then called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk, according to The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones. Strunk gave Harbaugh the same response and had empowered Borgonzi to make football decisions.

Simmons ultimately went to Chicago for two first-round picks and more. The Giants had already traded away fourth- and fifth-round picks in next year’s draft, making it difficult for them to match the reported cost.

Harbaugh has room to act

The episode adds to signs that Harbaugh has unusual authority since taking over as Giants coach. The account says New York could still make another major move before the Nov. 10 deadline. Simmons’ departure came as the Bears looked to take advantage of a wide-open NFC, with Caleb Williams and the offense still on inexpensive rookie deals.

Jets hold firm on Wilson

The Jets’ slide, including a 28-25 loss to the previously winless Dolphins, has raised questions about Aaron Glenn’s job security and a possible player sell-off. Will McDonald IV is among those who could be available, but Garrett Wilson is not expected to be traded.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter cited a source saying there was “no way” the Jets would trade Wilson this season. Wilson showed frustration with Geno Smith during the Miami game, but the team is keeping its star receiver. The account points to Wilson, Omar Cooper Jr., Kenyon Sadiq and a talented offensive line as reasons the Jets may believe their offense can improve.

Cowboys remain open to moves

Dallas has already benefited from its trade for Joey Porter Jr., but its defense continues to struggle as the NFC East remains wide open. Stephen Jones said the team still wants more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Jones said Dallas could address that through different means, including player acquisition. He added that the Cowboys would consider a move if it made sense.
