Ex Machina: Harry Potter Star’s 108-Minute Sci-Fi Masterpiece Officially Streaming Free on Plex November 1

Free streaming begins November 1

Plex will offer Ex Machina for free starting November 1. Alex Garland wrote and directed the film, which was among A24’s most acclaimed movies during the company’s early years.

Domhnall Gleeson, known for his role in the Harry Potter films, stars alongside Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. The movie received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won Best Visual Effects.

A changing A24 record

Ex Machina once became A24’s highest-grossing film worldwide. That record has since been surpassed several times, most recently by the horror film Backrooms. The film’s free availability comes as audiences can also consider newer science fiction, including Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling.

A new sci-fi comparison

Project Hail Mary follows Gosling as a man tasked with saving the universe who develops an unexpected friendship with a rock-shaped alien named Rocky. Collider reviewer Ross Bonaime gave the film a 9/10 and called it “the first great film” of the year.

The film is described as a leading sci-fi release of 2026 and a potential contender in several major Oscar categories next year. Ex Machina offers viewers another acclaimed modern science-fiction film to revisit.
