Fallout Star’s Divisive Sci-Fi Epic Officially Hits HBO This Weekend

A different journey to Arrakis

Before Timothée Chalamet played Paul Atreides, Kyle MacLachlan made his screen debut in the role in David Lynch’s Dune. The film’s strange beauty is part of its appeal, though its storytelling can leave viewers feeling adrift.

For audiences familiar with Denis Villeneuve’s films, Lynch’s adaptation provides a sharp contrast. Familiar characters appear in a world of elaborate costumes and grotesque creatures, making even well-known elements feel unfamiliar.

The story and its cast

Written and directed by Lynch, Dune follows Paul after his family takes control of Arrakis, a desert planet known for producing the valuable spice melange. After a betrayal, Paul is drawn into a conflict extending beyond his family’s survival.

Francesca Annis plays Lady Jessica, Patrick Stewart is Gurney Halleck, and Sting portrays Feyd-Rautha. The ensemble also includes Sean Young, Virginia Madsen and Max von Sydow.

A complicated reputation

More than four decades after its release, the film’s standing remains complicated. Its unusual style is a major part of its identity, while its storytelling has proved challenging for some viewers.

Its arrival on HBO Max gives audiences another opportunity to compare Lynch’s vision with the newer films. The two adaptations bring different textures to Herbert’s science-fiction world.
