Deadspin: Chandler Smith Steals Trucks Victory at Martinsville on Late Restart

Smith takes the late lead

Smith moved ahead of Riggs on the final green-flag restart and held the advantage to the finish. The 24-year-old Georgia native drove the No. 38 Front Row Ford to victory.

Rhodes finished second, .574 seconds behind Smith. Ty Majeski placed fourth, giving Ford the top four positions. Smith said the Martinsville win had long been on his list of tracks he wanted to conquer.

Riggs loses points advantage

Riggs dominated much of the race, sweeping both stage wins and leading 156 of the 200 laps. His third-place result leaves him 20 points behind TRICON Garage's Honeycutt with one race remaining.

A Riggs victory would have put him one point ahead in the standings. He said the bottom lane on the final restart did not work in his favor, and cited reduced grip and a lack of clean air.

Honeycutt faces title finale

Honeycutt finished 14th after contact with rookie pole-winner Tristan McKee during the closing laps. He had run in the top 10 for most of the night but did not lead.

Honeycutt said the 20-point margin was not comfortable and that his focus was on winning at Homestead. Riggs also said the championship could come down to himself and Honeycutt, with the winner taking the title.

Martinsville results and next race

McKee finished fifth after becoming the youngest driver in Truck Series history to win a pole position. Andres Perez de Lara was sixth, followed by Tyler Ankrum, Gio Ruggero, William Sawalich and Christian Eckes.
