Why Scream’s Forgotten 30-Episode TV Show Deserves Another Chance in the $1.1 Billion Horror Franchise

A different Scream story

Scream: The Series premiered on MTV in June 2015. It followed Emma, played by Willa Fitzgerald, as a masked killer targeted people in the small town of Lakewood.

Emma turned to Noah, a film-obsessed teenager played by John Karna, and a young filmmaker played by Ben Taylor-Klaus to investigate the killer’s motives. The show introduced a new setting and cast, with little connection to the films’ characters or events.

Leaving the films behind

The series did not use Woodsboro or bring back Sidney, Gale Weathers, or Dewey. Its killer wore a different mask, and the phone calls had few of the movies’ self-aware horror references.

The pilot did echo the original Scream by killing Bella Thorne’s character in its opening scene. Beyond that, the show established its own continuity, a choice that disappointed viewers expecting a closer match to the films.

Teen drama over slasher scares

With a TV-14 rating and a focus on teen drama, the series felt closer to Pretty Little Liars than to the darker, gorier films. It played more as a twist-filled thriller than a conventional slasher.

That shift gave the show a different appeal, the article argues, even if retrospective coverage often focused on its distance from the movies. The comparison with the campier Scream Queens also showed that a different tone could attract a cult audience.

A case for reconsideration

The article says the series can be easier to appreciate as later Scream films have drawn mixed reactions. It describes the 2022 reboot as a critical hit and Scream VI as a solid, if unspectacular, follow-up.

By contrast, it calls Scream 7 the franchise’s weakest entry and criticizes its jokes and callbacks. That decline, the article suggests, makes the MTV show’s separate approach seem less like a flaw and more like a reason to revisit it.
