Nearly 20 Years Later, Cassandra Clare Talks Shadowhunters Universe, New Release and 5 Book Recommendations

A final trilogy begins

The Wicked Powers is the concluding trilogy of the Shadowhunter Chronicles. Its first book, The Last King Of Faerie, is set to release Nov 3 and explores the Shadowhunters and Faerie realm more deeply.

The story follows Drusilla Blackthorn during her fourth year at Shadowhunter Academy. After a nightclub encounter leads to her kidnapping, she is imprisoned in Faerie by Prince Ash Morgenstern, where she feels drawn to him despite the danger.

A dangerous search unfolds

Elsewhere, a disappearance shakes the Shadowhunter world. Kit Herondale and Ty Blackthorn must work together on a perilous quest, despite the bitterness between them. The opening installment promises adventure, romance and humor, while placing friendship, family and difficult choices alongside its fantasy elements.

Keeping years of lore straight

Clare said she checks details regularly to maintain continuity across the series. She explained that the Shadowhunters’ history shapes the present-day characters through family ties, relationships and the consequences of earlier decisions.

After writing City of Bones, Clare began keeping a master list inspired by television show bibles. It tracks story arcs, characters, worldbuilding and family trees, helping her manage an expanding fictional history and magic system.

Fantasy romance finds new visibility

Clare recalled that when she began The Mortal Instruments, writers used terms such as paranormal romance and fantasy romance rather than romantasy. She said stories have long combined romance with fantasy, including tales of hidden communities and creatures.

In Clare’s view, BookTok has made readers’ enthusiasm more visible, while the genre now spans romance-led stories and epic fantasy with romantic plots. She said her books also address friendship, family, politics, identity and choices made in dangerous situations.
