Deadspin: 10th-ranked recruit Asa Montgomery commits to Duke after visits

Duke wins Montgomery’s commitment
Montgomery, a senior forward, announced Wednesday that he will play for Duke. His decision extends the Blue Devils’ streak of recruiting classes with a top-10 prospect to seven, ESPN reported.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound player is rated No. 8 in the country, No. 3 among small forwards and No. 2 in Georgia in the 247Sports Composite. He attends Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs, Georgia.
Visits shaped his choice
Montgomery visited Duke in early October and also made official visits to Georgia Tech, UConn, LSU and North Carolina. He told ESPN the Duke visit stood out and described the school as a longtime dream.
He said Scheyer was candid with him from the start and that he trusted the coach. Montgomery also praised Duke’s campus and its basketball culture.
Scheyer’s plans for Montgomery
Montgomery said Scheyer reviewed details of his game and explained how Duke viewed his potential role. He compared that style of player to sophomore guard and forward Dame Sarr.
Montgomery also said he valued Scheyer’s demanding approach in practice. He won gold with the U.S. under-17 team at the 2026 FIBA World Cup.
Duke’s 2027 recruiting class
Duke has two other commitments in the Class of 2027. They are five-star small forward Kager Knueppel, whose brother Kon previously starred for the Blue Devils, and Australian guard Luke Paul.
