Romania extends trial detention of right-wing politician Calin Georgescu by 30 days

Court extends detention

The Bucharest court extended Georgescu’s pre-trial detention by 30 days, overturning a lower court ruling on appeal. He remained in police custody after Wednesday’s decision, with detention scheduled to last until November 27.

Alleged credit line scheme

According to prosecutors, the suspects led the businessman to believe they could arrange a credit line of up to 15 million euros, or $16.7 million, from a foreign financial institution. The allegations are under investigation.

Supporters protest at court

Hundreds of Georgescu’s supporters protested against the investigation. Media reports said groups entered the Bucharest court building on Wednesday to call for his release. Other far-right politicians have also backed Georgescu and pledged to stand by him as political uncertainty continues in Romania.

Election dispute continues

The results and second round of the presidential election were scrapped following allegations of Russian interference. Moscow denied interfering in the vote. Georgescu was later barred from running again. Pro-European centrist Nicusor Dan won the rerun presidential election in May 2025.
