DC Announces the Official Name for Green Lantern’s Chrome Lanterns

A spectrum-spanning corps

The Chrome Lanterns are a recent addition to the DC Universe, led by Allsight Guy Gardner and Jessica Cruz. They combine energies from across the Emotional Spectrum rather than remaining within its separate forces.

Unlike the White Lanterns, they can access every color in the spectrum and choose which to channel. When they are not actively maintaining their chrome form, they revert to their original Corps colors.

Guy clarifies the name

In Green Lantern #40, Kyle Rayner returns to the Corps after solo adventures on Earth with Jade and Odyssey. He is surprised by changes among his fellow Lanterns, including Guy Gardner’s role as Allsight and the existence of the Chrome Lanterns.

As Guy explains the changes, he calls the Chrome Lanterns the “Guardian Lanterns,” according to the issue. The Guardian Lanterns are distinct from the Alpha Guardians, a coalition of Lantern representatives who host the Emotional Entities.

Alpha Guardians face danger

The Alpha Guardians include hosts such as Soranik Natu, who carries Parallax, and Razer, host to the Red Lanterns’ Butcher. The group can also transform into Chrome Lanterns at will.

Alexandra DeWitt’s return at the end of Green Lantern #40 as the new Black Hand threatens the group. Chrome rings rely on cycling through emotional output, while Black Hand’s necromancy feeds on emotion’s end; her touch can also rot them.

DeWitt’s return raises stakes

DeWitt was murdered by Major Force in 1994, during Kyle Rayner’s early days as Green Lantern. Her return places the Alpha Guardians and Kyle in danger as they confront her new role as Black Hand.
