At Japan military base, US bans China’s BYD vehicles, calling cameras and sensors an unacceptable risk

Kadena blocks BYD vehicles

The US military in Japan said Tuesday that BYD vehicles are prohibited at Kadena airbase, one of America’s largest overseas bases. The restriction applies to all BYD vehicles, including private cars, taxis and delivery vehicles.

Concerns over vehicle technology

The restrictions come amid concerns that cameras, sensors and GPS devices fitted in vehicles could enable information leaks, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported. Kadena hosts fighter aircraft and planes used for refuelling, surveillance and reconnaissance. Its inventory also includes the Typhon missile system, which is reported to be capable of firing Tomahawk missiles up to 1,600km.

US and China take measures

China has also restricted US-made Tesla vehicles. In 2021, it barred them from some government compounds over concerns about their cameras, lifting the restriction in 2024 after the country’s top auto industry association endorsed Tesla.

BYD expands in Japan

BYD is expanding overseas, including in Japan, the world’s fourth-biggest auto market. In July, it launched its Racco electric minicar there, aiming to compete in a market dominated by domestic brands. The small, cost-efficient vehicle is part of the company’s effort to establish a presence in Japan as the US military’s restrictions on BYD vehicles take effect at Kadena.

Key points

  • Kadena airbase has barred all BYD vehicles, including taxis and delivery vehicles.
  • The US military cited risks to personnel and its mission.
  • The Pentagon placed BYD on a list of 188 Chinese firms it believes have military ties.
  • BYD launched its Racco electric minicar in Japan in July.
