How ChatGPT Helped Fix My Wife’s Zoom Calls That Kept Dropping

A cable with no connector

The writer’s wife left for a business trip with a request: improve the Wi-Fi before she returned. Her Zoom calls had been dropping during important meetings, so he found an old Cat 6 ethernet cable in the data closet to connect her laptop directly.

The cable ended in bare wires, and he did not know how to attach an ethernet plug. He turned to ChatGPT and sent photos as he worked.

Guidance through the repair

ChatGPT recommended tools and explained how to strip the cable and arrange its eight wires. It also provided diagrams and encouragement when the writer became frustrated. His first attempt produced about 100 Mbps, far below the household’s 1 Gbps internet connection. ChatGPT suspected two wires were faulty and recommended an inexpensive cable tester; it then interpreted the tester’s flashing lights from a photo and confirmed the diagnosis.

A faster second attempt

The writer cut off the connector and tried again using a simpler plug suggested by ChatGPT. The new connection delivered around 850 Mbps. He said the assistant sometimes offered advice more complicated than he needed, so he reminded it he was not rewiring Silicon Valley. His goal was simply to stop his wife’s Zoom calls from dropping.

Key points

  • The writer used ChatGPT to help terminate an old Cat 6 ethernet cable.
  • The first connection reached about 100 Mbps, compared with a 1 Gbps internet connection.
  • A cable tester helped identify two suspected faulty wires.
  • A simpler plug brought the connection to around 850 Mbps.
