Bolsonaro’s Brazil Defeat Leaves MAGA Crying ‘Rigged’ as Calls for U.S. Action Grow

Lula wins the runoff

Lula secured 51.8% of Sunday’s second-round vote, compared with 48.2% for Flávio Bolsonaro, a difference of almost 4.4 million votes. In the first round, Lula had trailed Bolsonaro by two percentage points.

The result marked the first time a Brazilian candidate had come back from a first-round defeat to win the runoff. Bolsonaro rejected the outcome and asked election officials to annul it, calling the extended voting hours a “dirty trick.” Both campaigns had requested the extension after weather and transportation problems.

U.S. right claims fraud

American right-wing commentators quickly alleged that the election was rigged, without evidence in the account. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn questioned the vote count on X, while conspiracy theorist Alex Jones compared it to the 2020 U.S. election.

Donald Trump Jr. criticized the extension of voting hours, and commentator Mike Cernovich called on the State Department to act. Mike Benz claimed the hours had “just stacked the 2026 vote for Lula,” and alleged a Brazilian court tied to USAID was behind them.

Calls for intervention

Some far-right voices called for U.S. intervention. One influencer urged Trump to send a team for Lula, and Jones invoked the U.S. capture of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, Flávio’s brother, called on people not to recognize the result and said international pressure was needed. He cited early Polymarket predictions in a video posted to X as evidence of alleged fraud.

A setback for Trump

The result is a blow to Trump, who has longstanding ties to the Bolsonaro family. He has not publicly responded to Flávio Bolsonaro’s defeat.
