Prince William says Kevin Sinfield knighthood was the easiest decision anyone could make

Praise for Sinfield’s leadership

The Prince of Wales said Sinfield helps unite communities through his leadership. William added that the country would benefit from having more people like him. William and Catherine surprised Sinfield as he finished the third marathon in his latest fundraising challenge. Sinfield was made a knight bachelor by William at Windsor Castle in October 2026.

William described Sinfield as kind, honest and without ego. He said the honour was, in his view, an exceptionally easy decision.

Fundraising after Burrow’s death

Sinfield’s endurance events have raised money for charities supporting people with MND. His efforts followed the death of Rob Burrow, his friend and former team-mate, from the disease in 2024.

Sinfield supported Burrow and his family as the illness progressed, and became a prominent fundraiser for the MND community. William had previously met Burrow and Sinfield at Headingley Stadium in Leeds in January 2024.

William reflects on grief

In an interview with BBC Breakfast, William said he wrote to Burrow’s wife, Lindsey, and their children, Macy, Maya and Jackson, after Burrow died. He said he admired Lindsey’s quiet dignity as she coped with the loss.

William said people grieve in different ways and need time. He also said it is better to speak about grief than to ignore it.

Care and MND awareness

The report describes a facility focused on medical and holistic care for patients, as well as research into MND. William called the day deeply emotional and said personal, emotional work was fulfilling.

William also praised Scottish rugby union player Doddie Weir for his courage and his work raising awareness of MND. Weir died from the disease in 2022.
