How Revenge Fueled the Origin Stories of 10 Heroes Whose Grief Shaped Their Missions

Justice fails, vigilantes emerge
Adrian Chase first appeared in 1982 as a Manhattan district attorney committed to upholding the law. After a crime family bombed his home and killed his wife and children, he became a masked vigilante, pursuing those responsible.
Chase initially refused to kill, despite being driven by retribution. Over time, however, he became corrupt and crossed boundaries he had once vowed to respect. Matt Murdock, known as Daredevil, works as a defense attorney and protects Hell’s Kitchen at night. Blinded as a child by radioactive chemicals, he developed heightened senses; his father Jack’s murder, and the failure to secure justice, led Matt to confront those responsible. His mission later expanded to protecting others from criminals who evade the legal system.
Vengeance becomes an obsession
Billy Butcher leads The Boys, a group seeking to expose and eliminate corrupt superheroes, or supes. A former military operative with combat skills and a talent for manipulation, he wages war on those who abuse their abilities without consequences.
Butcher’s hatred began after Homelander sexually assaulted and caused the disappearance of his wife, Rebecca. His desire to punish supes grew into an obsession that came to dominate much of his life.
Loss shapes a warrior’s path
Tatsu Yamashiro, known as Katana, is a skilled martial artist and samurai who wields the Soultaker Sword. The blade can trap the souls of those it cuts and slice through almost anything.
Her brother-in-law Takeo used the sword to kill her husband, Maseo. After learning Maseo’s soul was trapped in the blade, Tatsu devoted herself to mastering it and pursuing those responsible for her family’s deaths.
A mission beyond revenge
Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents, Thomas and Martha, being murdered when he was a child. Their deaths helped drive him to become Batman, fighting crime and protecting Gotham’s innocent residents.
Revenge is not Bruce’s only reason for becoming a vigilante, but the killings shaped his hatred of crime and violence. They also strengthened his resolve to wage a continuing battle against Gotham’s underworld.
