What ifixit’s look inside the iphone Duo found may explain those broken screens and hinges

Crease-masking display details
iFixit examined the iPhone Duo’s internal screen and found a matte nano-texture cover. The layer improves readability in bright sunlight and scatters reflections, which may also make the crease less visible.
Under a microscope, the site saw oval-shaped subpixels set at different angles. iFixit believes their arrangement may reduce visual artifacts and further disguise the fold in the display.
Repairability has limits
The outer nano-texture layer can be replaced without replacing the OLED beneath it. But repairing the display itself remains difficult and expensive, as with other foldable phones. Dust reached the USB-C port, speaker grilles and hinge, making the hinge feel crunchy. Still, iFixit found less of the dust it calls “glow dust” inside than in the Z Fold8 or Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
Possible causes of damage
iFixit suggested that a component in the Duo’s complex hinge may sometimes fail to descend properly. The site also noted an accordion cable crossing that area near the battery’s edge.
Key points
- iFixit scored the iPhone Duo 5 out of 10 for repairability, its best result for a foldable.
- A matte cover and angled subpixels may help make the screen crease less noticeable.
- Dust entered the hinge, but iFixit found less glow dust than in two rival foldables.
- iFixit suspects hinge movement and cable placement could contribute to reported damage.
